Eyelid Surgery
(Blepharoplasty)

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure aimed at improving the appearance of the eyelids. It can involve the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on the patient’s needs and desired outcomes. Blepharoplasty is often performed for cosmetic reasons to address issues such as droopy or sagging eyelids, excess skin or fat deposits around the eyes, or bags under the eyes. However, it can also be done for functional reasons to improve vision impaired by overhanging eyelid skin.
The surgery typically involves making incisions along the natural creases of the eyelids to minimize visible scarring. For upper eyelid surgery, excess skin and sometimes fat are removed to create a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Lower eyelid surgery may involve the removal or repositioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles, and/or removal of excess skin to reduce under-eye bags and wrinkles.
Before undergoing blepharoplasty, patients will have a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss their concerns, goals, and medical history. The surgeon will evaluate the condition of the eyelids and recommend the most appropriate surgical approach.
Recovery from blepharoplasty varies from person to person but typically involves some bruising, swelling, and discomfort around the eyes. Patients may need to use cold compresses and prescribed medications to manage these symptoms. It’s essential to follow post-operative instructions provided by the surgeon to promote proper healing and minimize the risk of complications.
Most people can return to normal activities within a week or two after blepharoplasty, although strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for a few weeks. The final results of the surgery may take several weeks to become fully apparent as swelling subsides and the tissues settle into their new position.
Blepharoplasty can produce long-lasting results, helping to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes and improve self-confidence. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, including infection, bleeding, scarring, dry eyes, and temporary or permanent changes in eyelid sensation or function. It’s essential for individuals considering blepharoplasty to thoroughly discuss their options with a qualified surgeon and weigh the potential benefits and risks before making a decision.
