Revision Surgery for Unsatisfactory Results

Nose surgery after a previous operation

If your first rhinoplasty did not give the result you wanted, or you have struggled to breathe since, a second operation may be possible. Revision rhinoplasty is more demanding than a first nose operation: there is scar tissue, the structure has already been altered, and cartilage may need to be rebuilt. We arrange these cases in İzmir with surgeons who do this work regularly.

What Is Revision Rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty, sometimes called secondary rhinoplasty, is surgery to correct the result of an earlier nose operation. It can address how the nose looks, how it works, or both.

It is harder than a first rhinoplasty. Scar tissue makes the anatomy less predictable, and cartilage that was removed or weakened during the first operation often has to be replaced with grafts; usually taken from the septum, the ear, or in some cases a rib.

Is it right for you?

Revision rhinoplasty is usually considered when:

  • An earlier rhinoplasty left you unhappy with the shape
  • You have trouble breathing through your nose since surgery
  • The nose is asymmetric, or the tip has collapsed or dropped
  • The septum is still deviated
  • An injury has changed the nose after previous surgery

It may not be the right time if:

    • Less than twelve months have passed since your last operation. Swelling takes that long to settle, and operating earlier risks working on a nose that has not finished healing.
    • You smoke, and are not able to stop before and after surgery
    • You have a health condition that makes a general anaesthetic unsafe

Whether revision surgery is appropriate for you is a decision for the surgeon after examining you and reviewing your previous operation notes.

    How the operation works

    • Performed under general anaesthetic
    • Usually takes two to four hours, longer than a first rhinoplasty
    • Most cases use the open technique, which gives the surgeon a clear view of the altered structure
    • Cartilage grafts are often needed to rebuild support
    • Typically one to two nights in hospital

The surgeon will explain which approach applies to your nose and why, before you travel.

    Recovery

    • First week: splint and swelling. You will not look like yourself.
    • Around day 7: splint removed
    • Two weeks: most bruising has gone; many people feel ready to be seen
    • Flying home: usually from day 7 to 10, confirmed by your surgeon
    • Work: desk work after about two weeks; physical work and exercise later
    • Final shape: twelve to eighteen months. Revision noses settle more slowly than first-time noses.

Plan to stay in İzmir for at least seven days.

    Risks to be aware of

Every operation carries risk. For revision rhinoplasty these include:

    • Bleeding and infection
    • Breathing that does not improve, or becomes worse
    • Remaining or new asymmetry
    • Problems at the site where graft cartilage was taken
    • Numbness in the tip of the nose, sometimes lasting months
    • Scarring at the base of the nose
    • The possibility that a further operation is needed. Revision rates are higher for revision surgery than for first-time rhinoplasty.

Your surgeon will go through the risks that apply to your case before you agree to anything.
