Rhinoplasty /
Nose Job

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure aimed at altering the shape, size, or overall appearance of the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose or for functional reasons to correct structural issues that may be causing breathing problems or other nasal abnormalities.

Here’s an overview of the rhinoplasty procedure:

Consultation: Before undergoing rhinoplasty, you’ll have a consultation with a plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon. During this consultation, you’ll discuss your goals, expectations, and concerns regarding the appearance of your nose. Your surgeon will evaluate your nasal anatomy, skin thickness, and facial proportions to determine the most appropriate surgical approach for achieving your desired results. They’ll also assess your overall health and medical history to ensure you’re a suitable candidate for rhinoplasty.

Preparation: Leading up to the surgery, your surgeon may provide specific instructions to follow, such as avoiding certain medications that can increase the risk of bleeding and arranging for someone to drive you home after the procedure. You may also be advised to stop smoking and refrain from taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, as they can interfere with the healing process.

Anesthesia: Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be unconscious during the procedure. In some cases, local anesthesia with sedation may be used instead.

İncisions: Depending on the specific goals of the surgery, rhinoplasty can be performed using either an open or closed approach:

  • Open rhinoplasty: In this approach, a small incision is made across the columella (the strip of skin between the nostrils), allowing the surgeon to lift the skin and access the underlying nasal structures with greater visibility and precision.
  • Closed rhinoplasty: In this approach, incisions are made inside the nostrils, hidden from view. This technique is typically used for minor adjustments and requires less recovery time.

The choice of incision technique depends on factors such as the complexity of the procedure and the surgeon’s preference.

Reshaping and restructuring: Once the incisions are made, the surgeon will reshape and restructure the nasal cartilage and bone to achieve the desired appearance. This may involve removing or adding tissue, straightening a deviated septum, refining the nasal tip, or reducing the size of the nostrils.

Closing the incisions: After the necessary adjustments are made, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape, and nasal splints or packing may be placed inside the nose to support the newly reshaped structures and promote proper healing.

Recovery: After the surgery, you’ll be monitored in a recovery area until you’re awake and stable. Most patients can go home the same day, although some may require an overnight stay for observation. You’ll need to wear a nasal splint or dressing to protect the nose during the initial recovery period. Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are common and typically subside within a few weeks. Your surgeon will provide instructions on how to care for your nose, manage discomfort, and gradually resume normal activities.

Follow-up: You’ll have follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress, assess the healing of your incisions, and address any concerns or questions you may have. It’s essential to attend all scheduled follow-up visits and adhere to your surgeon’s recommendations for post-operative care to ensure optimal results.
