Breast Uplift Surgery / Mastopexy

Breast uplift surgery, also known as mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at lifting and reshaping sagging breasts to create a more youthful and lifted appearance. This procedure is often chosen by women who have experienced changes in breast shape and position due to factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, aging, or genetic predisposition.
Here’s an overview of the breast uplift surgery process:
Consultation: Before undergoing breast uplift surgery, you’ll have a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your goals, expectations, and medical history. During this consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your breast anatomy, skin elasticity, nipple position, and overall health to determine whether you’re a suitable candidate for mastopexy. You’ll also discuss the different types of mastopexy techniques available, including the extent of the lift and any additional procedures that may be combined with the uplift, such as breast augmentation or reduction.
Preparation: Leading up to the surgery, your surgeon may provide specific instructions to follow, such as avoiding certain medications that can increase the risk of bleeding and arranging for someone to drive you home after the procedure. You may also be advised to stop smoking and refrain from taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, as they can interfere with the healing process.
Anesthesia: Breast uplift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be unconscious during the procedure. In some cases, local anesthesia with sedation may be used instead.
Incision: During the surgery, your surgeon will make incisions in strategic locations to lift and reshape the breast tissue. The type and pattern of incisions depend on factors such as the degree of sagging, the size of the breasts, and the desired outcome. Common incision patterns include:
- Periareolar: around the edge of the areola
- Vertical or lollipop-shaped incision: extending from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease under the breast
- Anchor-shaped or inverted T: extending around the edge of the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the breast crease
The choice of incision pattern will be discussed with you during your consultation, and your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate option based on your individual needs and preferences.
Reshaping and repositioning: After making the incisions, the surgeon will lift and reshape the breast tissue to create a more youthful and elevated contour. If necessary, the position of the nipple and areola may also be adjusted to achieve better proportion and symmetry.
Removal of excess skin: In addition to lifting the breast tissue, the surgeon may remove excess skin to eliminate sagging and create a tighter and firmer appearance.
Closure: Once the desired reshaping and lifting are achieved, the incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape, and bandages or dressings are applied to protect the surgical site.
Recovery: After the surgery, you’ll be monitored in a recovery area until you’re awake and stable. Most patients can go home the same day, although some may require an overnight stay for observation. You’ll need to wear a special surgical bra or compression garment to support the breasts and minimize swelling during the initial recovery period. Your surgeon will provide instructions on how to care for your incisions, manage discomfort, and gradually resume normal activities.
Follow-up: You’ll have follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your progress, assess the healing of your incisions, and address any concerns or questions you may have. It’s essential to attend all scheduled follow-up visits and adhere to your surgeon’s recommendations for post-operative care to ensure optimal results.

WHAT IS BREAST LIFTING?
Breast lifting is surgery to raise and reshape sagging breasts. It’s also called mastopexy, it involves removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissue to lift and support the new breast contour.
DURING THE PROCEDURE
To lift the breast, your plastic surgeon makes one or more incisions in one of several common patterns:
• Around the areola.
• Around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease.
• Around the areola, vertically down, and along the breast crease (called an anchor-shaped or inverted T incision).
After making the incisions, the surgeon lifts and reshapes the underlying breast tissue to improve contour and firmness. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a more youthful height, and if needed, enlarged areoles are reduced.
Excess skin is removed to tighten the surrounding tissue and support the new breast shape. Once the breasts are lifted and reshaped, the incisions are closed with sutures (stitches), skin adhesive, or surgical tape. In some cases, breast lifting may be combined with implants for added volume
AFTER THE PROCEDURE
Soreness, swelling, and bruising are common for a few weeks after surgery. Your breasts may feel firm or tight during the initial healing period. Scars will fade over time, but they won’t disappear completely.
To support your healing, your surgeon may recommend wearing a surgical bra or support garment. Pain medication may be prescribed to help manage discomfort.
Ask your surgeon when you can resume regular activities. If your job isn’t physically demanding, you might return to work in about a week or two. Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activity, and exercises that involve arm movement for at 2 least 2-4 weeks. During recovery, your breasts may be sensitive to touch or sudden motion. Some stitches may need to be removed at a follow-up visit.
Your surgeon may also place small drainage tubes to prevent fluid buildup – these will be removed once drainage is minimal.
If you notice warmth, redness, fever, or unusual swelling, contact your surgeon – these could be signs of infection. Also reach out if you experience chest pain or difficulty breathing.
RESULTS
Breast lifting can improve the shape and position of your breasts, giving them a firmer, more youthful look. It may also enhance your body image and boost self confidence. But it’s important to keep your expectations realistic. Breast lifting won’t dramatically change the size of your breasts or stop them from aging over time.
As you get older, your skin will naturally lose some elasticity, and your breast shape may change again. Weight changes, pregnancy, and gravity can also affect long term results. If you’re not happy with how your breasts look in the future, additional procedures may be an option.
Also, aging will affect your breasts after augmentation. Weight gain or weight loss might change the way your breasts look too. If you don’t like how your breasts look as a result of these changes, you may need more surgery.
